Have you ever been in a situation where you needed to be rescued? A
perilous situation from which someone stronger or better resourced
needed to bail you out? At such times you can feel totally at the mercy
of the circumstances. Helplessly looking up, the hope is that the
rescuer will appear. Having been involved with Search & Rescue teams
before, and now with the Fire department, I’ve seen people who needed
that type of deliverance. They trust in the one coming to pull them out
and take them to safety.
In the life of
faith, the forces that contribute to a sense of helplessness are
everywhere. Whether conditions in the circumstances of our lives, or
conditions within our heart, we need rescuing from disaster. The Lord is
alert and ready to save us. Our appropriate response is to trust him,
and follow his guidance in leading us out of danger. Whether such
dangers were undeserved or self-imposed it doesn’t matter. God is the
One to whom we must plead, “Rescue Me!”
